FFAW (1972) Superstars

Welcome to the official website for the FFAW (1972) Superstars competition. The annual get together and series of events for the Woodkirk Challenge Plate.

In 1985 Dave Hassan and Kev Broadley had taken Kev's children (Lee, Jan & Sally) to Wakefield Park for a day out. After watching a display of martial arts (which included Andy Kibler spectacularly injuring himself) Dave had the idea to ressurect the old TV programme of Superstars. The programme where a collection of the days top athletes put themselves through a series of rigourous sporting challenges to see who was the best overall sportsman. Dave's clever (but simple) difference was to 'dumb down' the sports to a more manageable variety and call on old school friends instead of the UK's top athletes..

Due to the short notice only six competitors turned up in 1985 (Dave Hassan, Phil Stuart, Chris Wise, Steve Holt, Kev Broadley & Paul Sturgess) but that very first meeting was a great success and from it's humble beginings has grown a fine annual competition which casts a rosy glow over many lives. It's now well over 20 years old and as established in our lives as birthdays, Christmas and anniverseries.

In 2001 we entered a new phase of Superstars - The International event. Every 2nd year we take the competition out of England. In 2001 we went to Eire, in 2003 we went to Scotland, in 2005 we went to Switzerland, in 2007 we visited the Czech Republic and 2009's destination has yet to be finalised but Wales, Lithuania and Estonia have all been suggested.
